Starting January 1 you will see some new changes at the grocery store under Colorado law no plastic bags will be available at all at the checkout line.
“The option is really not guaranteed right now unless you pay for them so it sucks when you don’t wanna pay that extra $.10 or whatever so I guess they’re trying to save the whales finally,” Colorado Springs resident Antwon Yates said.
But starting in 2024 you won’t be able to pay 10 cents for a plastic bag anymore. Colorado is banning stores and restaurants from using single-use plastic bags. Instead, stores will only be able to offer recycled *paper bags.. For a dime.
This bag fee does not apply to Coloradans on either federal or state food assistance programs.
“In this economy, we didn’t think that we would want to spend that extra cash on plastic bags,” Colorado Springs resident Carlie Emery said. “It’s more of a frustration so it is what it is.”
11 News reached out to King Soopers to see what their plan is going forward, a spokesperson said quote:
“We are still working to finalize our plans and don’t have any details to share at this time.”
Grocery stores and restaurants who are not following this new law could see a $500 penalty for their first two offenses and $1000 for any offenses that follow. Those 11 News spoke with today say they are going to have to start remembering to grab their bags as they head out the door.
“Another thing on the checklist of things to get ready for,” Emery said.
“Half the battle is remembering reminding yourself that you need bags but I remember it until you’re in the parking lot,” Yates said.
